After graduating from law school, Ms. Dubs worked in a general practice law firm representing clients in personal injury, divorce, real estate and criminal cases. In 1989, Ms. Dubs joined the Office of the Public Defender for Judicial District 15A where she began representing people in criminal cases exclusively. While at the Public Defender's office, Ms. Dubs eventually specialized in the representation of persons charged with first degree murder where the State was seeking the death penalty.

In 1996, Ms. Dubs moved back to her hometown of Hickory, NC where she opened her own office. She continued her focus on capital murder cases and serious felonies, but also represented people in cases involving personal injury, injury from faulty products, Civil Rights violations and tortious conduct by law enforcement officers and officials.

Since 1996, Ms. Dubs has enjoyed a reputation as a prepared and zealous trial attorney. She has represented people in many different counties in North Carolina, but prefers to focus on counties close to Hickory.

In 2016 Ms. Dubs received the J. Kirk Osborn Award for outstanding work on behalf of indigent clients facing the death penalty.  Ms. Dubs has served on the Criminal Justice Section Council of the North Carolina State Bar Association and the Criminal Justice Section of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.

Ms. Dubs regularly helps train at the N.C. Capital College for attorneys involved in representing capital clients.  She has frequently shared her experiences with other lawyers as a presenter at legal education seminars for the N.C. School of Government, NCBA, NCAJ, CDPL and the Capital Defender’s Office of IDS.  In 2010 Ms. Dubs was invited by Amicus ALJ to present two lectures in London, England on the Status of the Death Penalty in the United States.
